Scarf is thrilled to announce the renewal of the Community and Renewable Energy Scheme (CARES) contract. This lets us keep supporting communities across Scotland. It means more communities generating their own energy and more organisations cutting costs.
This success comes as part of our consortium with Energy Saving Trust, Changeworks, and Energy Agency. We’re all working together to drive community-led energy projects. We previously delivered CARES together and are excited for another round.
The CARES funding has been confirmed for the next four years, which gives us a lot of scope to tackle big energy projects across Scotland. This directly supports the transition to net zero.
Driving community energy projects forward
The Scottish Government’s renewed commitment to CARES is great news for communities looking to take charge of their energy future. Over the next four years, this funding will fuel local projects and help organisations turn big ideas into real, lasting change. CARES has already invested £67 million and supported over 1,200 organisations, but there’s still so much more to do.
Michael Marley, Centre Manager at Scarf, shared his thoughts on what this means for communities: “We’re delighted to keep playing a key role in the CARES consortium. This programme is making a real difference, and we’re excited to see that grow. Projects like Alford Men’s Shed show how community energy can create warm, welcoming spaces while reducing carbon. With this funding, we’ll help even more communities do the same.”
£9 million in additional funding announced
At the recent CARES conference, the Scottish Government announced an additional £9 million in funding. CARES, through Local Energy Scotland, will manage these funds. The funding will help accelerate renewable energy initiatives at the local level. This ensures communities can actively participate in – and benefit from – Scotland’s green energy transition.
Scarf’s role in delivering impact
As a key member of the CARES consortium, Scarf plays a hands-on role in making support accessible. But our work doesn’t stop there. Beyond CARES, our expertise in fuel poverty guidance, energy-saving advice, and funding access ensures that communities get the practical help they need to make real, lasting changes.
Last year alone, Scarf delivered over 4,000 home visits, offering personalised support. For one household, our support resulted in £1,430 in total financial support through expert advice, fuel vouchers, and practical energy-saving measures. And this is just one example of how we help people cut costs and stay warm every day.
We’ve supported thousands of families in makingtheir homes more energy-efficient, reducing costs and improving comfort. Our tailored advice services have helped secure millions in grants and funding, ensuring those in need get the support they deserve.
Looking ahead to a brighter future
With the new CARES contract in place until 2029, we’re aiming to expand our support and reach even more communities. We’re committed to helping even more people cut costs, stay warm, and take control of their energy bills.
